Selkirk Pickleball Paddles — The Complete Lineup Decoded

Lab Verdict

8.5/10

Selkirk is the most established US-based pickleball brand. They also have the most confusing product lineup. “Luxx Control Air Invikta” sounds like four random words stapled together. Here’s what each Selkirk family actually means and which paddle is right for which player.

The four Selkirk lines

LinePrice rangeTierBest for
SLK$69-129Beginner / valueNew players, casual rec play
Vanguard$149-219Mid-premiumImproving 3.5+ players
Power Air / Luxx$230-260PremiumTournament-grade everyday
Labs$300+ExperimentalEdge-case spec hunters

The SLK family (beginner / value)

Selkirk’s entry tier. Composite face, polypropylene core, standard 16” shape. Best-in-class sweet spot for the price range. The line we recommend most often to brand new players.

Notable models:

  • SLK Evo Control Max ($99) — our pick for beginners. Biggest sweet spot in our test field.
  • SLK Evo Power — 13mm version. More pop, less forgiveness. Skip unless you specifically want power as a beginner (you don’t).
  • SLK Atlas ($79) — older model still available; great budget pick.
  • SLK Latitude ($89) — widebody shape; massive forgiveness, less reach.

Pick SLK if: You’re new to pickleball, value forgiveness over peak performance, and want a real brand backing your purchase.

The Vanguard family (mid-premium)

The bridge between SLK and Power Air. Real T700 raw carbon face, premium core construction, available in multiple shapes (Invikta elongated, Mach6 widebody, Mach7 hybrid).

Notable models:

  • Vanguard 2.0 Invikta ($179) — long-handle elongated paddle, the classic Selkirk control paddle.
  • Vanguard 2.0 Power Air Invikta ($219) — Power Air predecessor; great if you find it on sale.
  • Vanguard Hybrid ($169) — middle-ground for players unsure between control and power.

Pick Vanguard if: You’re a 3.5+ player who wants premium feel without paying $250+. Especially good if you’re a long-time Selkirk player who isn’t sure about the newer Air technology.

The Power Air & Luxx families (premium)

Selkirk’s flagship paddles in 2026. Both lines use the Air Dynamic Throat — an aerodynamic cutout that reduces swing weight and helps hand-speed exchanges.

  • Power Air = 13mm core (more power, smaller sweet spot)
  • Luxx Air = 16mm core (more control, bigger sweet spot)

Notable models:

  • Luxx Control Air Invikta ($250) — our best-for-control pick of 2026. Soft, forgiving, exceptional at the kitchen.
  • Power Air Invikta ($250) — power-leaning all-around paddle. Good for tennis crossover players.
  • Luxx Control Air Mach6 ($250) — widebody shape, even bigger sweet spot, less reach.

Pick Power Air / Luxx if: You’re a 4.0+ player or serious 3.5 looking for a paddle to grow into. Demo before buying — the aerodynamic throat feels different.

The Labs line (experimental)

Selkirk’s experimental tier. Higher-end faces (T800, Kevlar hybrid), unusual shapes, $300+. Worth it only if you’re a 4.5+ player with very specific preferences. Most players don’t need this line.

How Selkirk’s shapes work

Selkirk uses three shape names across their lines:

  • Invikta — 16.5” elongated. Long handle, more reach, smaller sweet spot. Two-handed backhand friendly.
  • Epic — 16” standard. Most balanced shape, biggest sweet spot in the family.
  • Mach6 / Mach7 — widebody. Even bigger sweet spot, less reach. For players who don’t need extra court coverage.

Most beginners and rec players should start with Epic. Advanced players who two-hand the backhand or play singles often prefer Invikta.

What Selkirk isn’t great at

Selkirk paddles tend to feel slightly muted compared to JOOLA. The Air Dynamic Throat helps swing speed but dampens feedback. If you like a crisp, reactive feel that lets you “hear” your contact, you might prefer JOOLA or CRBN.

Selkirk is also priced at the higher end of comparable specs. The Vanguard 2.0 Invikta at $179 competes with paddles like the Engage Pursuit at $169 — Selkirk asks $10-30 more for similar performance. The premium is for brand and warranty.

Where to buy

Brand-direct (selkirksport.com) gives you the best warranty support and demo program access. Pickleball Central also stocks the full Selkirk lineup and handles warranty claims. Amazon has most Selkirks but watch for counterfeits — buy only from “Sold by Amazon” listings, not third-party sellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between SLK and main Selkirk?
SLK is the budget sub-brand (think Apple SE vs flagship iPhone). Same brand backing, same warranty, but stripped-down face materials and core engineering. Great for entry-level.
Is the Power Air worth $250?
For a 4.0+ player, yes. For a 3.5 player, marginal. For under 3.5, no — the Power Air's precision advantages are wasted at that level. The SLK Evo at $99 is enough.
How often does Selkirk release new paddles?
About every 12-18 months. The cycle in 2025-2026 was: Luxx Air launch, then Power Air refresh. Don't panic-buy the newest release — older models on closeout often have 90% of the performance for 60% of the price.
Are Selkirks USAP approved?
All current Selkirk paddles in production are USAP approved. Check the official USAP equipment list if buying older or international models.
How do Selkirk paddles compare to JOOLA?
Selkirk leans softer/control-oriented and has better US customer service. JOOLA leans crisper/more reactive and dominates the pro tour. Both are top-tier. Demo both if you can.

Bottom line

  • Best Selkirk for most rec players: SLK Evo Control Max ($99)
  • Best Selkirk for tournament-bound players: Luxx Control Air Invikta ($250)
  • Best Selkirk on closeout: Vanguard 2.0 Invikta ($179, often $149 on sale)

Selkirk is hard to go wrong with. The lineup is confusing but the products are consistent.
